DeKalb Medical continues to be a leader in cancer research and treatment. The Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons validated the excellence of our program by granting an additional three-year approval to DeKalb Medical as a community hospital comprehensive cancer program. Only 20% of hospitals in the United States have been able to achieve this approval status.
DeKalb Medical has a world class Cancer Center and a widely expanded offering of services for cancer patients. New programs have been added and new physicians have joined the medical staff to give the program greater depth and expertise.

For New Patients: Patient Care Counselors & the Multi-Disciplinary Team Approach
Discovering you or a loved one has cancer can be confusing and upsetting. Cancer treatment is complicated and often overwhelming. You and your family will have many questions and need to make important decisions. With the support of our Patient Care Counselors, you will have a personal advocate to help you obtain timely information, screenings, diagnostic tests and medical appointments. Trained to manage a wide variety of cancer patient and family needs, our Patient Care Counselors become the facilitators and problem-solvers for both our patients and your care team.
The Cancer Committee is the multi-disciplinary physician staff component that shapes the programs of the center. The Cancer Support Team is made up of highly trained ancillary personnel who design programs directly related to patient services. All together, this multi-disciplinary team creates and orchestrates the cancer survival game plan.
Creating a Cancer Survival Game Plan
Our Four Phase Approach helps you and your family navigate through the cancer diagnosis, treatment and recovery process. You are the one who will physically, emotionally and spiritually experience this journey with your loved ones and the more you understand and participate in your care, the more you become an integrated part of your health care team.
The "TEAM PLAN" consists of four basic elements, all of which the Patient Care Counselor will help navigate:
- Take time to process the reality of your diagnosis and the emotions surrounding it.
- Educate yourself about your cancer and your caretakers should do the same.
- Assess your social, emotional and spiritual support network.
- Manifest a medical team with whom you have confidence, and which makes you feel comfortable.
The Tree of Life
The Tree of Life symbolizes hope and survival. In the winter the Tree looks barren and dead, but when spring comes, it bursts into new life. At DeKalb Medical, we want patients to gain strength from their journey. We want them to have hope and live life as freely as possible. We want them to look beyond the moment of disease to the bigger picture which encompasses the fuller meaning of life.
At the entrance to the Cancer Care Center, you will find a magnificent replica of a tree created for DeKalb Medical by well known Atlanta sculptor, Ivan Bailey. Mr. Bailey has shown his work throughout the country and abroad. Some of his major commissions include the fountain at the Opryland Hotel in Nashville, as well as gates, dividers and centerpiece at the Drake Hotel, New York, balustrades at the Hyatt Britannia Hotel at Grand Cayman Island, and a multitude of other business and residential designs.
