Two Questions:
To Dr. Lawhead: What do you consider most important in taking care of cancer patients?
“I try to practice what I call the Golden Rule of Medicine: I take care of every patient as I would the people I love the most. My goal is always to cure my patients of cancer and give them the highest quality of life. An educated patient is an empowered patient, and I stress accurate and complete understanding by patients and their families. In this medical era of confused priorities, there can be only one focus in my approach to medicine and that is taking the best care possible of each patient I treat. I chose medicine because of my passion to make certain that a patient is treated with respect and competency by a multi-disciplinary team intent on giving each one the greatest opportunity for cure. I try to live those values everyday with the patients who trust me to take care of them.”
To Judy McMahan, Ovarian Cancer Survivor: What did you find most important in the way you were cared for by Dr. Lawhead?
“Dr. Lawhead is simply outstanding. There are many things I could say: I felt I was the only patient he had even though his waiting room was always full. He creates an environment that is healing. He puts his patients first. He explains everything thoroughly. He is always honest but he is also always reaffirming. He is attentive and decisive. He is very upbeat and always encouraging. He is just so passionate about taking care of his patients. When you leave an appointment with him, you always feel better than you did when you arrived. I knew he was going to do everything in his power to cure me; not just give me a little more time to live. The way he treated my family was also outstanding. He included them in a way that made all of them feel like they were important members of my team. When I mentioned getting a second opinion, Dr. Lawhead encouraged me to do that. He said he wanted me to get information from any source I thought would help me. He wanted me to feel comfortable about my decisions and he was open to anyone else’s opinion. I also want to say something about his staff. They have the same approach to care as he does. When I was getting my chemo, they were beyond wonderful. They listened, they were great teachers, and they explained everything in a very reaffirming way. I was very, very happy with my care.” |
