Bookzilla is Back On!

Just in time for the AJC Decatur Book Festival presented by DeKalb Medical

Monster Surgery a SuccessHey everybody. It’s me, Bookzilla. I can’t tell you how ecstatic I am to be attending this year’s Book Festival. That’s because after blowing out my knee last fall racing to see Sara Gruen, I wasn’t sure if I’d be in any shape to mascot. Who knew such a little fall could have such a monster effect on me. I dislocated my knee cap and tore my ACL in eight places. We’re talking monster pain. Just ask Chipper Jones what kind of pain I’m talking about.

Icing my knee wasn’t easy. The city of Decatur had to truck in two 18-wheelers of ice for me each day, and even then, it only took the edge off the pain. I started overcompensating with my left leg when I walked and pretty soon, both my leg and my back were hurting. Carrying around 150 tons of monster muscle on a “bum knee” is bound to lead to problems. I knew it was time to do something when my running speed dropped from 26 mph to an all time low of 2. I’m embarrassed to say that I got to where I couldn’t even make it up the Decatur Library steps anymore.

Scaling trees for dinner became out of the question. I confess I became a “bottom-feeder” living off any low lying Zoysia or Bermuda grass I could find locally. It wasn’t pretty. I stopped jogging. I stopped climbing buildings. I quit meeting my friends in the park. I read the same book (Jurassic Park) 100 times. Within six months, I had packed on 2 extra tons. In short, I had lost my monster mojo.

That’s when Mayor Bill Floyd recommended I go see the good doctors at DeKalb Medical’s new Joint Solutions Center. They took some X-rays and an MRI of my “bum knee” and recommended a total joint replacement. I’ll admit, I’m a big baby when it comes to surgery, so this was a tough decision for me. But, here’s what it came down to. I had to ask myself, did I want to live my life in pain for the next 300 years or did I want a new knee that could get me back on top of the food chain again? I opted for surgery at DeKalb Medical’s new Joint Solutions Center, and it was amazing.

I was in and out of there in 3 days and they had me walking the first day after I got my new knee! Six months later, watch out world. I’ve lost 5 tons. I can scale the tallest sky scraper in any city and get from Decatur to the Big Chicken in 8 minutes flat. Thank you DeKalb Medical for helping me get my mojo back. You rock!
