The Surgical Weight Loss Center program is a proven care plan based on the National Institutes of Health guidelines. It has been designated a Center of Excellence by the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery and the Surgical Review Corporation. This designation is only given to bariatric surgery centers which demonstrate high quality, low complications and outstanding outcomes for large volumes of patients. A center of excellence designation recognizes a practice for patient safety and advocacy, which provides continuous improvement of bariatric surgery.
DeKalb Medical’s Surgical Weight Loss Center in Georgia is also listed among the Aetna Institutes of Quality for Bariatric Surgery and OptumHealth’s Clinical Sciences Institute. In addition, the Surgical Weight Loss Center has earned a Blue Distinction Center for Bariatric Surgery designation from Blue Cross/Blue Shield, is a CIGNA Certified Hospital for Bariatric Surgery and has been designated as a Bariatric Center of Excellence with United Health.
One of the best in Georgia, our Surgical Weight Loss Center, with highly qualified bariatric surgeons, offers surgery and lifestyle modification for individuals 100 or more pounds overweight. Our Surgical Weight Loss Center bariatric surgeons specialize in laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass and laparoscopic adjustable gastric band procedures. The Surgical Weight Loss Center, located on DeKalb Medical’s North Decatur campus, offers free group consultations and specially designed furniture and medical equipment.

Our Bariatric Surgeons & Staff
Our bariatric surgeons are fellowship-trained and board-certified, and our bariatric team has 20 years of experience and has performed over 1,000 procedures.
Dr. Scott Steinberg is the Medical Director for Bariatric Surgery. He attended Mt. Sinai School of Medicine in New York City, and received specialized training from Saint Vincent’s Medical Center, Staten Island University Hospital and Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. He is a member of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery and the Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons.
Dr. Qammar Rashid received her medical degree from Howard University College of Medicine in Washington, D.C. and her specialized training from Howard University Hospital, Morehouse School of Medicine and the University of Miami Ryder Trauma Center. She is a member of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery and the Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons.
